It's easy being green...

...or red, or speckled, or frilly, or...well, greens come in all different shapes, sizes and shades. This is my annual spring greens bed - I love this old water trough, it's been repurposed into a raised garden bed, and does a dandy job of it.

I get to calm my raging green thumb that longs for diggable (is that a word?) dirt while everything is still pretty much frozen feet deep. A chunk of plywood over the top keeps the snow and frost at bay, it warms more quickly than the ground-level dirt (I had to stop a moment and think about that statement), and best of all I don't even have to bend over!

The first seeds in are usually mesclun, some spinach, and whatever is left in lettuce packets from last season. This time it appears there was a nice bit of red lettuce left. I start transplanting some of the babies as soon as they have a couple of leaves - they get tucked in around other plants in the main garden, which by that time is at least thawed a few inches deep.

The rest I leave for cut-and-come-again salad fixin's. Once this tub gets going, it's hard to keep up with it!

For little effort , I get a huge reward...tasty tender spring greens, a psychological kick in the britches, a calmed-down green thumb, and great satisfaction.
Not to mention how proud Kermit is of me.
