Piggin' Out

Chef J has been into my cooking magazines again. "Gwamma, can we make these?"
OK - YOU look into those eyes and say "Nah, I don't wanna."

The recipe was actually very simple and easy. The decorating was - well, you'll see.

Hey, look at this! The oven got cleaned, folks! Pretty shiny, huh?!

Chef J has those little triangles whipped - we need 120 of them. Cut 5, eat a sugar wafer. Cut 5, eat a sugar wafer...
One thing we can count on...if we start something in the kitchen, it doesn't take long for a few more punks to show up to see what's cookin'. Put that kid to work. He's poking holes in the marshmallow half with a toothpick.
Then butterscotch chips get poked into the holes. Lee was pretty clever - he figured out they stayed in better if he poked them into the cut side of the marshmallows. We're never too old to learn... Care to guess what these are? Pig snouts. And nostrils, as Chef J gleefully explained to me.
"Hey, look, that one is tipping over..." Like they care, with frosting beaters to lick!
After Queen Frostina got some of the cookies smeared with pink frosting, the boys got into the decorating. Hey, if you've played Candyland lately you will know who Queen Frostina is - the boys dubbed me with the moniker. "Queen Frostina, you're getting behind!"
Any project with these guys has lots of joking and horseing around - they keep me laughing. Also amazed, at their nimble minds and sense of humor.
The Maxster carefully places an ear. He is soooo happy when he's busy! Max: "I wanna a pink one. Can I have da pink one?" "They are ALL pink, Max." "No, no, da WEALLY pink one." "Oh. You mean this one with the pink crumbs accidentally stuck on his nose?" "Yah, Damma, dat one." This kid has his pink fixation still firmly in place. If it's pink, it belongs to Max.
Lee got a camera for his birthday.
Ta-da. Pig cookies.

When we looked at them all lined up, Lee started doing the StarWars theme - "dum, dum, dum, da, dum, dum..." Storm Troopers. I cracked up. Picture it - Pig Troopers. Something like the Muppets.
As we assembled each piggy face, they developed individual personalities. They spoke to us.
What's worse - we replied. What do you say to a collection of demented pigs like this display?? You just tell me you can look at these faces and not laugh - go ahead, tell me. With a straight face. This gang is the result of Max's keen imagination and deft fingers. Those mini-chocolate chips are hard to maneuver, man.
"WHAT??? Are you SERIOUS? You're going to EAT us???

"Ah, come on...give us a break. We're too CUTE to eat. We know it, you know it."

"Hey, I can sing ya a song! How about...Ol Man River? Ya, Ya, I can do Ol Man River...here goes..."
"NO, my mom did NOT drop me on my head as a piglet!"
"Look at me, look at me! I'm the only one who has little piggy eyes properly close together!
Nah, nah, na nah nah!"
"Where's my bow? Little baby piggies need pink bows on their head. Where's my pink bow?"

The proof of a project. The taste test is successful.

Did someone say WOLF?

PIG COOKIES (makes about 60 cookies - 5 doz.)
Cream:
1 c. butter, softened
1 1/2 c. sugar
Beat in:
2 eggs
1 c. sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine:
3 c. all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
Add to creamed mixture and mix well.
Drop by tablespoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 375 degrees about 10 min., until edges are lightly browned. Remove from pan, cool on wire rack.
FROSTING
Combine:
4 c. powdered sugar
1/2 c. butter, melted
6 T. milk
2 tsp. vanilla
3 - 5 drops red food coloring
Pink sugar wafer cookies,30 large marshmallows cut in half (scissors work great), butterscotch chips, mini-chocolate chips
Cut sugar wafers into squares, then triangles; place two on each cookie for ears. With a toothpick poke two holes in each marshmallow half (cut side up); press butterscotch chips into holes. Place noses on cookies; add chocolate eyes.
Note: I accidently discovered that putting the cookies in the frig for about 10 minutes, after dropping them onto the baking sheet, resulted in cookies that didn't spread as much, were more mounded in shape when removed from frig and then baked. Made nicer pig heads. I had to wait for the bread to finish baking before we could do the cookies, and our timing was a tad off. Serendipity.
