We love our neighbors. The farms on all sides have been friendly, supportive, fun, helpful, educational and generous. We often comment to each other, and various audiences, that WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS!!!
We have other neighbors who are more transitory. They fly in for the summer, and leave when the weather starts getting dicey. Or when the toads and frogs go into hibernation - effectively closing the deli.
One of the summer families that we enjoy are the Sandhill cranes. They are raucous, elegant, and HUGE. Here we see a family in the neighbor's soybean field. That's the sugarhouse in the background, for maple sugaring.

These birds wander with stately tread through the fields, fly overhead announcing their arrival with their distinct calls, and are always cause for the remark, "LOOK! Sandhills!" from adults and kids alike.

This family has a mamma and daddy, on each end, with the youngin's in the middle. If you look carefully, see how much smaller and more brownish the punks are. Seeing baby sandhills is like icing on the cake.

No matter how many times we see them, it is always a thrill to know they have chosen our neighborhood to spend their summer.
