Apple pickin'

From the tree into the boxes and buckets - takes an intrepid ladder-climber to get those perfect apples that are always at the very top.

And there he is! On top - the very top- of a ladder.
Here's the "over-the-shoulder, behind-the-back" technique.

Pretty good, eh? Than is a top-of-the-tree apple picker (great pun, yes!) and a super side-kick for our escapades. I can count on him to say "sure, gramma" when I need some help!
It took him only a few minutes to wrap up the apple operation, lashing the ladder down for the ride home.

But he's not real excited about helping out with the next part - making apple sauce. He's got a good book lurking in his back pocket...

We just bought new crop Gala apples at the market. But...they are never the same as right off the tree apples. What is the variety?

The apples are Yellow Transparents. They are THE summer apple. the first ones you'll see ripe - usually when they have turned yellow and are dropping from the tree. Go from tart and green to yellow and mooshy almost overnight. We got nice green ones first picking, I've been drying them; this picking is for applesauce - they make WONDERFUL applesauce! We have shared boxes and buckets with a number of friends - nice to be able to spread the loot!
