The Power of Pinkie Pie

Being the youngest punk in the family is kinda like being the #2 car rental company - you try harder to beat the big boys. A frequent refrain we've noticed the past six months: "Wow, Max, you did that sooner than I did!" That's from the older brothers. A couple of landmark events were learning to ride a bike, and swimming.
Another one happened just this week. Max has become an independent rider at the ripe old age of four.
Of course it helps to have a horse handy, especially a kid-tolerant horse. Nebula is kid-safe for ground work, and usually cooperative to ride. Her biggest problem is that she has a typical mare trait: obstinate. She can plant herself and refuse to move - sorta like a big brown fuzzy rock. An Immovable Object.
Uncle Pat convinced Nebby a few manners would make her life more pleasant. And it didn't take Max long to become the Irresistable Force that conquers Immovable Objects.
There always comes a testing point between horse and rider, no matter the age or experience.
After a few circuits of the 40 acres, Nebby had decided the corral was a good stopping place for the day. Max had more riding in mind.

An Immovable Object develops good evasion tactics, like moving the nose but not the feet. Makes most riders give up, after a 10 minute session of head tossing and no forward progress.
But Irresistable Forces have a great deal of Persistence in their tool box. OK, so now the neck is moving. But the feet are still planted. If this were a video, you would see the pink boots going to work, thumping that Immovable Object with another Irresistable Force tool - Determination.
Alright, this is more like it - head AND feet moving. And the pink boots are still thumping.
A huge resigned sigh from the Immovable Object, and a big grin from the Irresistable Force!
And off they go for another trip around the fields and ponds. And the pink boots are still doing their job.
Another place where a video would have been useful - Nebby started trotting to catch up, and Max started sliding off to one side. Never fear, Irresistable Forces rarely hit the ground - he scooted himself back to center, and kept on going.
"Hey, we went fast!" "Yes, Max, that's called a trot..."
Nebby is a good sport, she gives the punks whatever ride they can handle. Quieter with the younger riders, a bit more challenging with the older ones. Nebby is teaching them to ride, just like Carrie's old Rosie pony taught her, at about Max's age. Horse crazy is definately a gene. It's in the blood, no matter what the DNA scientists say.
Not only can he make her go, he can make her stop - and that's probably more important. Yep, that's our Max. Irresistable.
Pinkie Pie? That's one of the My Little Pony gang. She's pink of course, and Max's favorite. She matches his pink boots.

I LOVE your blog. I'm getting settled back in to the old routine and have taken a few minutes the last couple of days to catch up on the porch, etc. It is wonderful to see the progress since we were there. You are my link to the "punks" and I am very proud of them. I think your "repurposed" windows are awesome. Happy to see how much has been done.

Hi Ethel,
Loved the pictures and the narrative! I actually had a dream about Max last night - he didn't have black hair and I remember thinking, "Oh, must have been a temporary color!" I also remember that in my dream he was NOT riding on Nebby and acting like he had been doing so for thirty years! He looks very confident! Nice going Max! Love, Lucy
